Chapter 13 – The Devastator

“So what are we going to tell our hosts?” Matt asked.

Along with Lorian and Rognir, they had been in their meeting room discussing several things—the conversation with Jack that morning, the revelations about Eriana and Soliander, and Kori’s appearance within the Palace of Andor. But so far, they had only agreed that the news would upset everyone.

Eric said, “I think it depends on what we decide about this rescue attempt. We need to be proactive. I don’t want to walk in there and say Zoran the Devastator has her and we don’t know where he is or what to do. We need to hash out what we know about Soliander’s alter ego.”

Matt nodded. “Let’s have a solution, even if they disagree or suggest changes. I think this is our mission, not theirs.”

Eric nodded and turned to Rognir and Lorian. “So what can you tell us about Zoran the Devastator?”

Lorian said, “Not much is known before two years ago—which makes sense, now that we know he is Soliander. He conquered the Kingdom of Esson on the planet Delonin. Esson is a military junta, run by warlords. They believe power comes to those who take it. Perhaps it is fitting that Zoran used wizardry to summon monsters, dragons, ogres, trolls, and dark elves into the halls of power and subdue those in charge. They were outmatched and unsuspecting.”

“I remember!” said Matt, images having flashed through his head. “He let them live as they had before, except they could only make major attacks at his direction. If they obeyed, he would make their strength rise with his. Most of them agreed. He killed those who didn’t. Any resistance ended when he used them to invade the nearby Kingdom of Marduna from Esson, and they grew rich on the spoils.”

The elf said, “Can you tell why he invaded Esson, or Marduna?”

Matt’s eyes widened and he stood up. “Yes! For Everon.”

Eric scowled in confusion. “What’s the connection?”

Matt pieced it together while they waited for him. “Long ago in Marduna, a wizard killed a dragon and cast a spell on its blood. Anyone drinking the blood daily gained the ability to control the dragons. Naturally, the wizard only let his family drink it. Together, they controlled enough dragons that they soon conquered Marduna, and the wizard became king.

The royal family ruled for generations, but the wizard king died without writing down the spell he’d cast on the dragon blood. It would not last forever, so they killed a new dragon annually, draining its blood into the Dragon Pool, which was a specially designed and heavily guarded place. The new blood, mixing with the enchanted blood there, would gain the same enchantment. This is how they stayed in power, using their control of the dragons to inspire obedience within Marduna and cooperation elsewhere.

“The Ellorian Champions were summoned to destroy the Dragon Pool and succeeded. The result was that the royal family lost their source of power. The inevitable happened. Most were killed, either by the dragons or the unhappy population.
